The Norwegian whitefish factory trawlers generate large quantities of residual raw materials. Only minor parts are utilized due to lack of economic incentives and viable technology onboard the fishing vessels. The whitefish residuals have food grade quality, and a large potential for value creation through development of new food products.

The Nordic Centre of Excellence for sustainable and resilient aquatic production (SUREAQUA) was established in 2017 to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across the Nordic bioeconomy community.
Nordforsk
A web portal with indicators on the sustainability of Norwegian aquaculture was developed. The portal was released in December 2018, and covers more than 20 different themes on environmental, economic and social sustainability. The portal has been replaced by the service AkvaInfo in January 2025.

We coordinate, develop and increase Nofima’s total expertise related to the future of sustainable protein production. Peptek is a strategic research initiative focused on sustainability, total utilization, food safety and future food security.

CtrlAQUA
CtrlAQUA is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) that will lay the foundation for the development of closed-containment concepts of the future. With greater control of the production process, it will be possible to reduce problems associated with mortality and sea lice, and to reduce the production time for farmed salmon.
